5 Ways Hunger Affects Children Beyond the Dinner Table – June 2026 Blog

When you think about children who are hungry, what comes to mind? An empty plate, a missed meal, or even malnutrition?

While hunger certainly affects a child’s physical health, its impact reaches far beyond the dinner table. Food insecurity influences a child’s ability to learn, grow, build relationships, and achieve their full potential.

At United Food Bank & Services, headquartered in Plant City, Florida, we see these challenges every day—especially during the summer months. That’s why our Feeding Our Future program was created: to help ensure children have access to nutritious food year-round, particularly during weekends, holidays, and summer breaks when school meals are unavailable.

Today, Feeding Our Future provides food assistance to more than 15,000 children and distributes more than 250,000 pounds of food annually through this program alone across Eastern Hillsborough County.

Here are five ways hunger affects children beyond the dinner table—and why your support matters.

  1. Hunger Affects Learning and Academic Success

A hungry child struggles to focus.

When children go to school distracted by hunger, it becomes difficult to concentrate, retain information, participate in classroom activities, and perform well academically. For many children in our community, school breakfast and lunch programs provide critical nutrition during the school year. However, when school is out for weekends, holidays, and summer breaks, that reliable source of food disappears.

Through Feeding Our Future, United Food Bank & Services helps bridge that gap by providing nutritious food that helps children return to school ready to learn and thrive.

  1. Hunger Affects Physical Growth and Development

Children need proper nutrition to build healthy bodies.

Without consistent access to nutritious foods, children may experience fatigue, weakened immune systems, developmental concerns, and an increased susceptibility to illness. These challenges can lead to more missed school days and fewer opportunities to fully engage in childhood experiences.

Hunger doesn’t just affect how children feel today; it can impact their long-term health and well-being.

The Feeding Our Future program provides families with groceries and weekend meal support to help ensure children receive the nourishment they need throughout the year.

  1. Hunger Creates Stress and Anxiety

Children are often more aware of family struggles than we realize.

When food is scarce or the pantry and refrigerator are running low, children may worry about whether there will be enough to eat, whether their parents can afford groceries, or whether food will be available during school breaks. This uncertainty can create anxiety, emotional distress, and feelings of insecurity.

By providing dependable access to food, Feeding Our Future helps relieve some of that burden, allowing children to focus on being kids instead of worrying about where their next meal will come from.

  1. Hunger Impacts Social and Emotional Development

Childhood should be filled with opportunities to learn, play, and build friendships.

Unfortunately, hunger can affect a child’s confidence, behavior, and ability to engage with peers. Children experiencing food insecurity may feel isolated or embarrassed about their circumstances. Hunger can also contribute to irritability, difficulty managing emotions, and challenges forming positive relationships.

When children have access to nutritious food, they are better equipped to participate in school and extracurricular activities while feeling more confident, connected, and empowered.

  1. Hunger Can Shape a Child’s Future

The effects of hunger do not end when a meal is provided.

Research consistently shows that childhood food insecurity can have lasting consequences on educational achievement, health outcomes, and future economic opportunity. East Hillsborough County experiences higher rates of poverty than many surrounding areas, making access to nutritious food even more critical for local children and families.

When children have access to proper nutrition, they are more likely to succeed in school, maintain good health, and build brighter futures.

That is why United Food Bank & Services views Feeding Our Future as more than a feeding program—it is an investment in the next generation of our community. Through partnerships with local schools and community organizations, we work to ensure children have access to nutritious food throughout the year, regardless of when school is in session.

How Can You Help Feed Our Future?

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive without the burden of hunger. Children cannot control the circumstances into which they are born, but together, we can help ensure they have the resources they need to succeed.

The need is especially great during the summer months when thousands of children lose access to school meals.

Through financial contributions, food donations, volunteer service, food drives, and community partnerships, you can help United Food Bank & Services continue providing critical support to children and families throughout Eastern Hillsborough County.

Together, we can do more than fill empty stomachs. We can help build stronger students, healthier and more self-sufficient families, and brighter futures for the children in our community.
